Robert Stevenson’s Thoughts on the Pursuit of Excellence

How Bad Do You Want It?

January 8, 2023

I love this video. Watch Video It is the perfect depiction of "Giving Your All." The question we all need to ask, and answer is, "How bad do we want success?" The runner in this video was willing to put it “ALL” out there to win. It’s another new year and people making “New Year’s Resolutions” are happening all around us. Last year for my first New Year’s article I pointed out - “25% of the people who take the time to write-up their New Year’s Resolution, only last one week, before going back to their old ways. That number jumps to 34% by the end of one month. The Statistic Brain Research Institute found that only 8% are successful in achieving their resolutions; now that is a depressing number.”

I feel that 8% number has everything to do with “LACK of COMMITMENT.” In my opinion, success is ALL about commitment. Rather than talk to you about what changes you are going to make in your business and personal life for this NEW YEAR to be more successful … I felt it to be more advantageous to talk about the key element you need to ensure your success: Commitment!

Go back and look at the video again to see what true commitment is. Before you write anything down that you plan to change or improve about yourself this year … would you please write down why you are committed to do it. I don’t care what it is, I care about “WHY” you are committed to do it. Let those reasons drive you to success. The better the reasons, the more likely you are to achieve it/them.

The definition of commitment is an agreement or pledge to do something. The key word in that definition is “DO.” It didn’t say kinda do or kinda finished. You don’t kinda get somewhere. You either got there or you didn’t. Kinda never accomplished anything. Remember this: If you kinda want something you will seldom be successful in getting it.

Kinda is the informal way of saying “kind of” and you won't find it in dictionaries. I suggest you take it out of your vocabulary as well. You don’t want to KINDA hope, do, try, or wish for anything. One of my New Year’s Resolutions is I decided to take up YOGA.
Am I lousy at it – Yes!
Does it frustrate me – Yes!
Do I look stupid trying different poses – Yes!
Do I feel totally out of my comfort zone – Yes!

I did this for two reasons. First of all, it will be great for my health. But the second reason spills over into both my personal and business lives. Doing YOGA every day is a great reminder to me that I need to keep stretching myself if I plan to improve. We will never know our full potential unless we challenge, push, stretch ourselves beyond our “Self-Imposed” limits. There are 84 classic Yoga poses. Will I master them all? I hope so. But even if I don’t, I still win.

Make the commitment to GIVE YOUR ALL to whatever you decide to improve this year and SUCCESS will follow!
