Robert Stevenson’s Thoughts on the Pursuit of Excellence

A Bad Boss

February 19, 2023

by Robert Stevenson

It seems crazy to spend so much money properly training employees only to run them off with a BAD BOSS. A boss has an incredible influence over the employee experience. We’ve all heard the phrase “employees leave bosses, not companies.” Well, it’s true. In fact, 57% of employees leave their jobs because of their boss and 82% leave because of lack of recognition. Those are horrific statistics.

Throw Down the Gauntlet

by Robert Stevenson

To throw down the gauntlet means … to challenge. The term comes from the time of medieval knights when a knight would offer a challenge by throwing down his gauntlet (a metal glove which formed part of his suit of armor). The other knight accepted the challenge by picking up the gauntlet; to take up the gauntlet means to accept a challenge.

The Importance of Simplifying

Great management guru, Peter Drucker, was awarded over 25 honorary doctorates. He wrote 39 books that were translated in over 30 languages … which adds up to over 10,000 pages of his insights on business. One of my favorite quotes by him is: “Most of what we call management consists of making it difficult for people to get their work done.”

The Piercing Sound of “OOPS” !

May 20, 2022

by Robert Stevenson

To countless business owners and managers, that simple, one syllable, short, easy to say word …”OOPS”… is a piercing sound to their ears. It is identifying to them that something bad is getting ready to happen; complications, problems, glitches, issues, delays are now on the horizon that could possibly lead to upset clients or even losing clients. But most assuredly, “Oops” is getting ready to cost you money.

Say What?

The ability to communicate is the single most important skill determining your success in life. No matter where you are from, what you do, or what position you hold, you must communicate effectively if you want to succeed. The key word in that last sentence is “Effectively.” Research has demonstrated people only read about 20% of the text, therefore, 80% of information is being overlooked. Let me put it another way: 5 times as many people read ONLY the headline … that is why there is much more pressure surrounding the headline than many other parts of the content.

Loyalty

by Robert Stevenson

We become loyal when we believe in something or someone; it is something that is developed—or lost—as a direct result of our own actions, behaviors, and motives. To earn the loyalty of others, your behaviors and actions have to reflect that YOU WERE LOYAL FIRST.
