Robert Stevenson Blog - Dominate - crush your competition

No one is going to hand you success, you must seize it yourself. The great Jack Welch, former CEO of GE, is famous for saying, “If you don't have a competitive advantage, don't compete." Find a way to dominate a space and be original. Have the attitude that you want to CRUSH your competition. How? A simple first step to domination is to do what others in your industry aren’t doing.

Take the banking industry … you won’t find many open on Sunday; now that is an opportunity. Or, how about the salon business; most are closed on Mondays; another opportunity. If you have the ability and willingness to seize an opportunity, you could be creating a huge advantage for your company.

Another way to DOMINATE is to respond to customers as fast as possible. Customers don’t want a voicemail telling them you will be getting back to them in 24 hours.; they want a response now. If you want loyal customers, figure out how you can resolve issues, NOW. The faster you respond, the better chance you have of keeping the customer and having that customer tell others just how pleased they are with your customer service. Try having a human answering your phone rather than voicemail; that will really set you apart from most companies today.

You should also ask customers if there is anything else you can do for them. Asking them is a sure way of showing that you are interested in pleasing them, and who knows … they may even come up with a great idea for you. AND … being open from 9-5, Monday through Friday, just won’t cut it in today’s highly competitive marketplace. By extending your hours and days of operation, being open when consumers are home from work, will help to get you more customers. Or, how about having flexible hours for your employees. Sometimes you can appeal to talented people from your competitors by merely offering flexible work schedules or giving them options to work at home.

To dominate you must be...

Your objective is not to compete … It’s to Win – and you do that by DOMINATING. Never let anyone else set the pace. Never let anyone else set the bar … you set the standard.

Have the confidence that NOTHING is going to stop you. The 7 words that will kill any company are, “That’s the way we’ve always done it,” so start thinking differently. Be the person or company everyone wants to be like.

Winners don’t blend … they’re LEGENDARY … THEY DOMINATE.
